Why does it want a payment method for a free song? Are they looking to sell (I mean lose) my credit card info?

So far Google's record of keeping the credit card numbers is far superior to that of Sony or Target. They assume that people would actually PAY once in a while for songs on Google Play, so they shouldn't create special bypass cases in software (which theoretically could make it LESS secure) for free downloads.

They are giving away free songs with the credit card requirement because they want to gain new customers, to have people become familiar with their service and set up an account so it seems quicker and easier to buy something from them in the future... similar to many other companies doing the same thing.

I would NOT be surprised if Google had all of my credit card info already

Ben's filter works on words but not on photos. Look at the picture. It's showing some dude's Johnson.

Although getting free MP3 isn't a big deal, having alternate sources for redundancy is nice too. Having Google and Amazon battle over customers by giving away free stuff is good for all of us. Apple, are you ready to fully engage in this conflict?
