If U have access to any type of decent hardwood (oak, maple, hickory, etc.) just use a few ordinary pcs. of charcoal at first, then add the hardwood to cook over.
This is very decent charcoal. I used it before I switched to "competition" variety. I also believe that it used to be cheaper and still can be bought on sale once in a while. Price is not bad but not outstanding compared to other good coal.

It's a hell of a lot more difficult to control temperatures if one follows your recipe. I've been trying tricks like these for years and results are substandard. Sure you can add a modicum of nice wood for flavor, but it won't make a convenient cooking fuel.
