They are indeed carbon zinc batteries. Capacity is abysmal compared to alkaline, but they are physically lighter and will never leak. Perfect for remotes and calculators and devices that don't chew through batteries before they leak.

I was just about to comment how all of the included batteries in my lights I have bought from them leaked, so these must be different.
Avoid. Love the Harbor Freight, but these are terrible batteries. They wear out extremely quickly, and I've had more than one of them leak early in use. I'd recommend the Costco pack instead, whenever you can find it on sale.
I can't believe people are complaining about the quality of FREE batteries... By the way, this isn't some special deal at Harbor Freight. They constantly offer a variety of free items that you can get with any purchase as a way to entice you to go there. I personally have acquired quite a collection of free items from them over the years, including LED flashlights, digital multimeters, screwdriver sets, tarps, work gloves, measuring tapes, etc. I have never tried the batteries, but I can say the digital multimeters, measuring tapes and screw driver sets have worked very well for me.
Yeah you don't have to make a purchase, and I'm the last one to sing the praises of HF tools (besides the prices), but if you're going there anyway you HAVE to buy something.
On the coupon flier I received today there are "no purchase required" coupons for a 4-in-1 screw driver and for a 27-LED portable worklight, in addition to the one shown above for the batteries. Good for retail store only.
The coupons I have received in the past required a purchase, but they could be used online as well as in store.
I'm a regular customer and have "collected" about every freebie. I've found the most useful to be the 4 in 1 screwdriver, flashlight and small tarp. I keep a flashlight and tarp in each car in case of a flat tire. The batteries never worked out for me, but the price was right.
I picked up a few of their multimeters free, though unfortunately they don't have an auto-power-off feature so it's a lot easier to forget to turn them off and run down their 9V batteries.

Yes, they are giving out in store if you have coupon. I didn't make any purchase. Just went in for the free battery and that's it.

Thank you!
