I bought it at BJs a couple of weeks ago. Really marked down a lot, but it was for the 2015 season. Check date at bottom back of bag. Regardless, the grass is sprouting after 8 days. I over seeded to compensate for poor dating.

I went to the store to check this out and when you look at the label on the back, you find that it's 95% non-seed (looks like dirt). So you're basically paying $25 for the 20 lb bag which has about 1 lb of seeds. $25 for 1 lb of seed! Are you crazy? another gimmick.
^ Yes that's deliberate. Some if not all of their EZ Seed products are coated to hold water and promote sprouting. No I'm wrong this isn't the coated type.
It's not what you'd buy to seed a large area but if you have a lot of small patches you don't have to worry so much about watering them. Not sure but that might also deter birds from eating it.
This is not the coated stuff ...the bag has clear see-thru sides and it's all dirt with a few seeds. The coated stuff you're thinking of is 50% seed, not 1-5% seed like this.
^ Hmm, I think you're right. "EZ Seed" seems to mean that they added soil, though the coated stuff I have looks like the coating is more than 50% of the contents, but I've had good luck with it, didn't need to put on as thick as raw seed that washes away or gets eaten by birds even if I put straw down... but I'm lazy when I do raw seed, could sprinkle topsoil over it but don't... easier to just use more instead so long as it's still the rainy season.
On a related note, Scotts topsoil is one of the best cheap options, at least at my local Lowes.. seems the cheap stuff can vary in content by region, some people buy generic that has more bark, or more sand or stone, while the Scotts here has mostly finely shredded mulch with a good % of it already decomposed into humus.

Thank you!
