well, you need toe socks to wear toe shoes, because its disgusting to let your shoes absorb all your foot sweat since they cannot be washed.
As for the toe shoes, they are also disgusting as are, really feet in general, but they do promote proper toe alignment. Take a look at your feet right now, or anybody's, and you'll see the toes are curled and mashed into a shoe form. That is not what a foot is supposed to look like. Somehow, we as a society have agreed to deform ourselves so that we can wear aesthetically pleasing shoes. Really shoes should just be foot shaped so that they don't deform the toes. I think the problem is, the feet deforming shoes are so pervasive, that at this point, everyone's feet are so deformed that it requires separate toes in the shoes to realign the toes. And while I don't own a pair myself, I can imagine that this feeling is actually pretty good even it means looking like a complete tool while wearing them.

Imagine this: what if you wore mittens all the time that mashed your fingers into a pointy shape, so that you literally could not straighten them when you took the gloves off. Then someone came out with fingered gloves that straigthened your fingers out. Imagine how that would feel. I"m guessing pretty wonderful. Now, obviously you don't use your feet the same way as your hands, but evolutionarily speaking that is a relatively recent development, and the shoes we wear are placing evolutionary pressure on limiting the function of our feet, not improving them.

Now I don't think people think about all this, anymore than they think about what makes an attractive sex partner. They just like the way it feels.

Toe-riffic! I love my Fila Skele-toes. Very comfortable. In general I like wide shoes that give more room for my toes. Otherwise you'll end up with "Hammer-toe" like Seymour states.

These socks should work well with them.

Even with the book written above, I still don't understand why people would buy it. They're ugly.

Or the other way to look at it is that we are evolving faster than biological evolution would otherwise allow. We have hard, especially paved surfaces that bring great benefit to our society but the *natural* state of our feet to wear no shoes or socks, could not allow us to travel much on it.

Consider an ape. It does not jog for exercise, not travel distances to go to work or even grocery shop. The realignment of our toes inward is allowable because we have superior balance enough that it streamlines the profile of the foot and doesn't cause undue stress on an extended pinky or big toe sticking out.

Note this also in biological evolution, that human toe length and foot width ratio have both decreased from that of our pre-human ancestors, a sign that we don't need this functionality so much any longer and that there might be advantages to compact toes if you don't climb trees a lot.

Toe shoes are stupid and look ridiculous (just use an open toe sandal if it's about "toe alignment"). Toe socks on the other hand are nice - I have these exact socks and like them. On occasion I'll get 1 toenail that ends up rubbing on a neighbor toe (if I haven't trimmed my nails in a while) and when that happens the nail cuts into the flesh and gets the sock bloddy. Don't have to worry about that with these socks.
