People still use these kinds of devices today? some cell phone can do the similar quality video if you don't count optical zoom in as a factor.

Much better than any cell phone, even you Apple fanboys. If you believe otherwise, buy it and enjoy. For those with any sense, take a look at the size of the lens element on the Canon and compare it with the physical limitations of your teeny weeny little glass lens on your cell phone. Gee wiz, and some of you even went to college. Stop protesting the election and get some education or find a job.

100x clearer, and more brilliant than a cheap-o cell phone camera.

Ignore any digital zoom - that's just garbage. 10x optical is still far better than any cell phone can accomplish. You could spend a bit more on a dSLR kit which does FHD videos as well. This way, you get the best possible stills on a digital recording device and you have the flexibility of recording HD videos.

    so... stupid question...
would this take video shots that much better than a higher end DSLR? or, would having this on top of a dslr redundant?

Just bought one for $321 plus tax on Canon's website. Not sure how long it will last.
