Update [2/26]: Staples has now updated the specs on the product page to 3rd Generation Core i5-3330 (but kept the incorrect model # I3847-4616BK which is 4th Gen Inspiron 3000). Thanks for the feedback in the comments.

Ends 3/1. Staples has the Dell Inspiron 3000 Series 4th Generation Core i5 Quad-Core 8GB Desktop (I3847-4616BK) on sale for $450 with free shipping.

Staples has labeled this model as the "660 Series," but it's actually the updated 4th Gen Haswell 3000 Series which replaced the 660.

  • Intel HD graphics, 802.11n Wi-Fi, BT 4.0, DVD±RW, Win 8 x64

Very good unit for the price, nice reviews in general. As always complaints about windows 8, Can always load classic shell to make it act and look like a windows 7 unit.

In for one. Looks like a great price... Would Staples honor an exchange if the older system is shipped?

That's a great price for the unit. The only part i don't like on that model is the 300 watt PSU.

^ Not really, they misinterpreted the data.

Desktops service life has increased. Each incremental improvement brings less and less advantage for the buyer to upgrade, because of the maturity of that commodity unlike the much less mature tablet and phone tech in the market.

Further there is now a legion of people capable of repairing them without needing a high skill level to do so, so it becomes less and less cost effective to replace an entire desktop when only a $100 or less part fails.

That doesn't mean desktops are going anywhere, rather that they are now in their prime, that you can get a great value and not have to bother replacing it every couple years.

Phones and tablets will soon end up in the same situation, presumably being displaced in sales by wearable smart clothing including glasses and hats, though I think they will retain sales a bit stronger than desktops because they are more prone to breakage or theft.

Hm....on the fence. Worried I'd not get what Ben is actually claiming here. What I see that worries me:
      1. Intel HD Graphics 2500
      2. 220W power supply
      3. No firewire connector

Umm .. how can you confirm that this is the 3000 series and staples is not trying to unload old 660's?

I should receive it today and let you all know if it's the 3000 series or the 660.

I agree that desktop service life has increased, or IT depts stretch the life of existing desktops as the tech has matured. From a business standpoint desktops will always be the workhorse - the larger monitors, the more comfortable input devices (keyboard and mouse), etc. are just better suited for work than a laptop or tablet. From a consumer standpoint that may happen too.

Cloisterman send it back, as that part number is for a 4th gen. Amazon has it at $450 right now:

got the one sold by Amazon for $450 plus tax. Free shipping. At first they said it was backed up by 2 months, but then mine got shipped today. way to go.

They have the same one sold by third parties that comes up first and costs ~$100-$150 more.
