I know it helps pay for maintenance and scooping people out of Old Faithful but it just strikes me wrong to have to pay to visit a National Park. Now if the animals handed out free beer and stuff I could see paying but otherwise.

^ Tell me about it. I have to deal with a similar situation in youth sports where the local residents' taxes already pay for parks then the sports league comprised of those tax paying residents gets charged several thousands of dollars a year to use the park fields that the taxes should have already paid for, fields that the parks department was obligated to maintain either way, and the kicker is we also have our own fields and manage to maintain those for a fraction of the cost the park director greedily decided to start charging a few years ago.

... then once when I went to check on their maintenance efforts, I saw three parks' trucks, at least 4 parks workers, but only one of them doing any work.

Hey, it's a free country, as long as you have money. It's against the law to be a pioneer any longer....

Since everyone bitches endlessly about taxes there is no way congress will cough up the dough to run the parks. There are far too many that think freedom is free. Freedoms just another word for nothing left to loose.
