For the first time in more than a decade, Amazon increased its minimum order requirement for free shipping. It's now a $35 minimum, up from the $25 we have all grown accustomed to. The annual price for Amazon Prime (free shipping on all qualifying orders) continues to be $79.

No official reason given, but it seems to be (unfortunately) just in time for the holiday season this year...

Inflation, 25 bucks for free shipping was a loss leader, at 35 they should break even.

As a Prime member, the price increase doesn't affect me. However, you don't get free shipping on all orders, only Prime ones. Many of their marketplace products are not Prime qualified, so shipping is charged. And on a lot of those, if you get a defective product, you have to pay for the return shipping. Prime orders have return shipping prepaid. (Another reason I'm a Prime member)

As long as they they don't raise the prices for their products across the board I don't see an issue. Shipping and logistics rates have increased quite a bit over the last 10 years.

How long do you think it will be before they raise the Prime subscription?

until you start getting taxed for your state and realize amazon's prices aren't really that great the last few years. that said, their customer service remains awesome for the most part.

Customer Service IS awesome. I was told an item was in-stock and ready to Prime ship (deliver Thursday), then found out it'd take a week to ship. 5 minutes with customer service, and they no-charge bumped me to overnight, shipping today. Sure, the item price wasn't any cheaper than the stores, but it was a hard-to-find color option, AND I didn't spend time or gas hitting the local stores.

Another great thing about Prime is you can invite other people to "join" your membership, up to 4 people last I looked So, you could make everyone contribute to the cost and really save some coin and then every member can use Prime as if they bought it separately.

I've been a Prime Member for years and enjoy Amazon's service. Still, it looks like cost containment moves are coming. First they had the Add-On items, now the increase for non-Prime members to $35 to get free shipping. It also doesn't help that they now charge tax in my state, not that it's really their fault. And, I have noticed that their prices are increasingly not as competitive as they used to be. Definitely have to do more comparison shopping whereas before, Amazon would be an automatic choice.

I tried Prime on their 30-day trial. They missed my 2-day shipment by a week, in large part because they used Lasership. When I called to complain, they could not guarantee that my purchases would not be shipped Lasership. Google all the problems people have had with Lasership and you will see that lost/late/damaged shipments are practically the norm. I ended my trial of Prime, and will never sign up for the service. If Amazon wants to force me to other vendors, so be it.

They quietly started to increase Prime fees last summer. We Prime members were once able to have any Prime item overnighted for $3.99. Now, one day delivery depends on item weight and is variably priced.

Wondering if Amazon just feels as though they've sucked in enough customers, that they can now adopt the attitude (like Apple), of "If we wanted you to have that feature, we'd give it to you"??

Go check the ongoing thread of people telling Amazon they HATE the new daily deals page layout (on Amazon's Gold Box page, look toward the bottom). Literally thousands of people saying they detest the new page design, not one peep from Amazon...as if they're just looking down their noses at us, wondering why we're not kissing their hand??

Add to that the add-on BS they started last year, and now this? Plus, unless you buy a LOT of stuff from Amazon, or do a TON of streaming, their Prime membership doesn't pay for itself, either.

No wonder I'll sign up, then cancel it out the next day, only to enjoy 2-day shipping for the next 4 weeks, while I do my Christmas shopping! Wink
