Do you mean, with Google Maps, on smart phones? Actually, only ~25% of people with cell phones own smart phones. And there's still plenty of GPS units out there, that need updates.
So, no, they didn't.
I find it difficult to justify paying this much for a map update when you can replace the entire unit for not much more. It's a rare occasion where I can't get where I'm going with my 'old' map. And, it's a matter of principal since I purchased my Garmin shortly before they started offering lifetime maps. I felt taken enough.

^ Even 25% seems high to me, like whoever polled to come up with as high as 25%, did so in a tech savvy venue.
Most adults today have cellphones but the ones you see always on them or bragging about them may be apt to spend more for their smartphone, compared to those who just want to make voice calls and occasional texting.
According to Gartner, 36% of ALL types of mobile phone sales in Q2 2012 were smartphones, but this says nothing about the existing legions who were already using regular phones, or the trend for owners of smart phones to upgrade more often to get expanded feature sets.
I'm sure that someday practically all phones sold will seem pretty smart compared to what we were using a couple years ago, and yet quite a few people will never make use of the majority of features on them.
I'm gonna dump my "smartphone" by the end of this year. Paid way too much for garbages. FYI, I have both android and iPhone.
I got this thing. Failed with Mac OS Lion but did fine with Windows XP.
A new unit costs a hundred or so. My old 265wt is still serving well.
