I had this software on my pc and it warned me my hard drive was failing but the pc showed no signs of the drive failing so I ignored the warning. Sure enough a few days later the drive died, so this software does work.
I had this software warn me that a drive was failing and the drive is still kicking well over a year later. Granted the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic also failed it, but then passed it during the extended test, but HDS still flags it.
I have a copy of it and find it useful for checking drive temperatures and translating the SMART data into a more readable form. Dave_c mentions that even when the drive triggers SMART failure, the drive may still continue to function without failure. Google did a rather large study on SMART and concluded the same thing, SMART failed drives can function long after the trigger.
Personally, I instantly relegate the drive to emergency use only when SMART is triggered.
