Water softening is the removal of calcium, magnesium, and certain other metal cations in hard water. The resulting soft water is more compatible with soap and extends the lifetime of plumbing. Water softening is usually achieved using lime softening or ion-exchange resins.

I wouldn't mind this. Our water is on the harder side. Stains the heck out of things. My whites are not very white because of the hard water.

Makes water softer, so you use less soap. Soft water removes many of the harsh minerals that cause stains in your basins and commodes, and deposits in your shower and tap fixtures. If you've ever had to use lime away or CLR, you know what these deposits can do. With a water softener, you'll find you use less soap and your clothes and your body will rinse cleaner. I've had my Kenmore water softener for 11 years and still working great! (but I still keep one cold hard water line to my kitchen tap (and refrigerator tap) so that I don't have to drink the soft water.

Oh no. He's going to detail how you can achieve the same thing with some cheese clothes and a bag of charcoal.

Heh, that would only remove certain contaminants, not minerals. To get the minerals out you need a bag of pretzels, duct tape, a bidet and a dust pan.

I used one when I had a well and there is no comparison, hard water produces cleaner water than soft.
