Thanks Ben! i was about to pull the trigger until I saw that it wasn't Smart TV. I don't think i care much that it isn't, but it's the matter of principle.
What you need a smart tv for? That's a wasted feature.
Not always. I can stream most digital media formats from lan without needing a separate HTPC to do so.
Granted, it still requires another box to serve it up, but if that were an issue I could directly connect a USB external HDD or just play off a USB flash drive or other (camera or phone).
However those smarts are from an external box which made more sense because it has a cablecard in it, but besides the cablecard I could do most of the same directly through the TV... at the time it didn't cost more to get the rest of the feature with the smart one built in too.
^ My experience has been that the formats they will play off the USB media can vary and get old very quickly so that newer formats don't necessarily play.
^ Sure but it's very rare for my smart box to not be able to play something... it seems we have come to the era where people encoding things keep in mind that smart tv/box compatibility is desirable.
It might be different if it were random videos from individuals without that concern but even the stuff on youtube is *normalized* to be playable... I mean using a video download add-on to store a copy locally instead of going through their website player interface, which also works directly.
Regardless, all smart boxes or TVs are not created equally but this seems to be one of those areas where with newer products, the tech is catching up to the established newer formats.
Before you buy an LG TV remember Vizio is a branch of LG. Most complaints are LG TVs burn out an led just after 1 year. Their manufacturers warranty is only 1 year.

You would still do better with a cheap HTPC.
