I've had the black version for quite a while. It requires a special driver to work. Windows, and ChromeOS have the driver built in. . Linux does not have them. OS/X may have different driver
So it is possible that, in addition to the cosmetic difference, there may be a difference in the required drivers. Or maybe Apple cosmetics just cost more ;-{!
