If you have any spare change - step up from the Starcaster and get a low end Strat or Tele. You get what you pay for when it comes to guitars.

#3, it says that its a Stratocaster. Thats why its called a Strat Pack. Also why its described on the site as: "The Fender Starcaster Strat Rock Band Electric Guitar Value Pack delivers a great-sounding, sleek-looking Stratocaster guitar ..."

#4 is right, apparently a Starcaster by Fender is not a Starcaster, but is likely a Stratocaster, but of lower quality. Talk about a naming disaster.

Darn bacon filter. The last part of the URL is underscore by underscore Fender. Why does y underscore F become bacon? bacon

It goes like this: Starcaster (toy) < Squire (entry) < Mexi Strat (real guitar) < Jap Strat < US Strat (the standard) < US CUstom Strat

Not even sure if they even make em in Japan anymore.

Leo is rolling over in his grave. Damn company now has so many different variations its hard to keep track of them. Of course that being said, the Mexi guitars usually get pretty good reviews for having a good bang for the buck. But you may as well buy the G&L Tribute guitars if you're gonna spend as much as you would on a Mexi strat. But geez, avoid this Starcaster crap.

this is fine for a beginner or a kid if you're not sure if you're gonna stick with it. a low end strat still goes for about $400, so that's hardly spare change for someone that's never picked up a guitar before. this is clearly aimed at people that play rock band or guitar hero and have said, "hey, maybe i'll learn the ACTUAL instrument now" - good for them.
no need to be so elitist about it, folks.

#9, that's what the Squire used to be for. It's made of plywood. It used to be $99-$199 or so (depending on the bundle, color, time of year, where it was assembled, etc.). Next step up is the Mexi Strat for $400. So everyone bought their kid's a Squire for a first guitar. It was designed to fit that niche. Quality was marginal, but sometimes very good.

If it was me, and I was buying a first "strat" for an adult, pre-teen, or teen, I'd look at Squire first before considering something less.

All this said, I don't personally know how the Starcaster is made so it's possible that it's a decent guitar. Do you your research first.

Also, for those looking, take a look at Rondo Music (Google it). They sell a Chinese-made knock-off brand called "SX" that is surprisingly high quality. $89-$199 or so, and sometimes on clearance for $49. Real instruments. Perfect for a first instrument, garage-band, or backup axe.
