Magellan's Life-Time (LM) free maps update can be useless.
Their device driver / firmware is extremely poor. It may work once, and then the next time Windows would only recognizes it as a mass storage device (especially after you have installed some disk-cloning software). Even uninstalling such software did not help at all.
There are complaints about this issue all over the internet.
Just Google "Magellan content manger can't update my gps device". You can also see the huge number of negative feedback on Amazon against various Magellan's LM issues.

Magellan's software (Content Manager) does not see the device connected, and cannot update the maps, no matter what solution I have tried, including step-by-step following Magellan's suggestions. This would happen after you have spent hours downloading the nearly 1.5 GB update.

Content Manger itself is very poorly made as well.

In my case, this has happened to me trying to update one of their 5" devices. At least 5 brand new USB cables were tried to no avail.
This is still the case on all of my machines (Desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate 64, Desktop running Windows XP Pro, SP3, 32, and laptop (Intel i7) running Windows 7 Ultimate 64.

All Windows are up-to-date, as well as Content Manager.

Magellan's customer service is worthless, in my experience. They copy and paste from templates and send you their replies (in email), and they would repeat the copy and paste of the same template in subsequent replies, which indicates that they don't even read your replies to them. Just as if they were dumb robots.

I would NOT recommend a Magellan product to my family or friends, until they improve their drivers / firmware, and the dumb Content Manager, as well as their customer service.

Aside from buying directly from them, try to reach customer service for a technical issue; good luck!
