Ends today. Newegg has the Microsoft Windows 8 Professional Upgrade Version for $70 - $40 rebate [Exp 1/27] = $30 with free shipping. Through January 31st, Microsoft Store still has it for $40 downloaded with Media Center for free. This is for upgrades from Windows 7, Vista or XP SP3, not Windows 8.

And for those who asked for free Win 8 media center keys, don't forget we have until 1/31/13 to activate them. Or I guess the world ends. I don't know. That's what Microsoft said.

What if there are no drivers for your old computer running XP SP3?
^ It's very rare to not find available hardware with XP drivers to do any particular function. In some cases a specific make and model might not, but that's unusual as a large % of the world's PCs still run WinXP... Today it's more of a case of "not supported" which can mean they just didn't test it. It's in their best interests to design code that runs on all OS from XP forward rather than use functions only available on the latest OS, unless there's a really good reason for doing so.
Most people don't update their OS unless forced to buy a new PC because the old one failed and costs more to fix than it's worth. Granted, every year that goes by since the Vista era started results in a larger and larger % of XP era systems failing or being retired from old age but even so, a lot of hardware (drivers) that are current generation models were still developed more than a year ago, sometimes a few years ago when XP had a larger and larger market share. It may've been the case that even the developers were running XP at the time.
Microsoft has to do an end of life on their software otherwise why would people upgrade? Like noted, people will upgrade when their old computer dies or becomes too slow. I have Windows 7 machines but my primary computer is stiill XP. I never bought into Vista (thank God.) XP works great for me but I know eventually I will have to upgrade. Windows 7 is cool. Windows 8 is just freakin stupid on a desktop. I have a Win 8 machine next to me with the add on start button. There is no need to upgrade unless there is some feature you just can't live without or unless you are finally forced to through lack of support.
I was annoyed by the lack of the Start button but then stumbled on this link which makes sense:

Unless people add/customize their actual Start button layout that button is pretty useless. So if anybody misses their Start button - it is still right there... on the keyboard
Whatever. Goto classicshell.net. Get your start button. Use your I hope free media center by 1/31/13. Maybe it supports your ATI TV tuner. IDK. But freakin enjoy. Otherwise be the sheep you are and stfu.
One reviewer on Newegg said the upgrade included Win 7 but I figured why screw around with the rebate to save $10 so I downloaded it from MS. Well, it's only Win8 and although I wanted to upgrade from Vista, Win 8 totally sux on a desktop. AND the compatibility check was WAY inaccurate. Now I have to get upgrades ($$$$) of several programs, including Quicken. And where are all my saved emails? Installed the Start button and Windows Live Mail to make it more user-friendly but even so there are too many headaches and weird "features." A Win 98 for the 21st century!
