Unfortunately a lot of these cheaper models (foreign made) have ridiculously short lifespans due to the soft soles, but I buy them anyway as you can get a almost a year's use.

Yes, I agree...'course I might wear any given pair of sneakers only a couple of times a week so if I get 2-3 years of wear from a $40 pair, that is a bargain, in my opinion.
Foreign made? Doubt there are any affordably priced American made running shoes with good lifespan.
The general thought on running shoes is, make them light even if they fall apart sooner, because your 100lb+ self needs shoes that weigh 3 oz less, to win all those races you're placing 2nd in. :P
