We've made our own bread (sour dough and commercial yeast) for many, many years. Bread machines do work but frankly approaches like the N.Y. Times no-knead technique (check out sites like Breadtopia) produce much better results and are very simple. I was in a resale shop last week and they had 6 or so bread machines for sale...$8-10 each. Several were unused in the original box.
I've been using a machine like this for 25 years. I replaced my first Panasonic after 22 years because the heating element had deformed to the point it was touching the inside wall. I bought another Panasonic. I prefer the machine over keeping a sour dough starter going because of the variety of breads I make and convenience. Bread flour is $5.49 for a 25 pound bag at my local Costco. I think it still costs less than $0.25 to make most loaves, although the Greek Isle bread with yogurt, feta, cucumber, black olives, etc. is more expensive.
