This is tempting. Right now I have a PC running WHS 2011. It works ok but is getting a few years old.

^ and? Any PC with the GbE on the PCIe bus is going to have as good or better performance so all you really gain with this is a little less power usage... having to run it many years to recoup $288.

Well there is also the smaller case footprint but if you already made room for what you're using that doesn't seem much of an issue.

Otherwise, it probably has a slower CPU and less memory than your "few years old" PC, and is limited to only 4 HDD.

    ^ what dave_c said.

Unless you have something screwed up with your setup, any old computer will perform better than anything but the fastest SOHO NAS appliances.

I have to disagree dave there is a lot more to benefit from sure you do get the low power consumption But in my case i wanted to upgrade my main pc with ssd drives but with me running a media server i think it would make the life of the ssd go much quicker So in turn will save your ssd drives if i move to this for media streaming also should make the life of your pc last longer in general

^ That makes no sense. We were talking about using a 2nd, additional old computer for the task, one where the duty cycle on the volumes holding the data is the same either way, based on client access.

Further if a system is already running which it would have to be for this functionality, then the very small load from streaming files is a negligible impact on system lifespan.
