NewEgg.com has the Samsung SH-S182D 18X DL DVD+/-RW Drive (Black) for $30 + $0 shipping = $30 shipped. Supports Dual Layer burn speeds of 8x in both DVD-R and DVD+R formats.
My experience says no but you can always ask for a credit. I was given $10 or so one time in the past for this kind of thing. I think it is a customer service decision. Again, I have not confirmed this per their website and it may have been becasue I spend thousands each year on their site but...
#2, thanks for the reply. I am trying to get a Pioneer 112D from NewEgg. Unfortunately they have been out of stock for several weeks. Another user mentioned that Meritline has them in stock. However, I would rather get them from NewEgg if their DOA policy includes free return shipping.
from what i can tell, they expect you to pay return shipping no matter what the problem is. i did get something DOA and paid to ship it back. i complained to newegg later about the cost of shipping it back and they credited my credit card for the cost. it was quite easy and they did not hassle me at all. i'm sure they keep track to make sure it doesn't get abused though.
#2/#4, I just contacted NewEgg about their "Standard Return Policy". Here is their response:
1) If I receive an item that is DOA, who pays for return shipping to NewEgg? Ans: We would send you a shipping label.
2) Does the restocking fee apply for DOA items if a refund is requested? Ans: No
3) If I request a replacement instead of a refund for a DOA item, do you replace it with a refurbished unit or a new unit? Ans: It would be a working item, we would not guarantee a new item.
It looks like NewEgg's Standard Return Policy is excellent except for sending refurbished products if you ask for a replacement. Compare this to Meritline or Supermediastore where the customer has to pay for return shipping even for DOA items.
Here is my recent experience... I ordered a few lower end x1050's from the Egg. First order was 2, one had broken plastic shaft that holds the fanless heatsink. Fixed myself and works fine. Last one also had same problem, so I RMA'd through the website, and I never saw the offer for them to pay shipping, so I paid for UPS ground. About $5. I expect a brand new, not refurb back but according to above, I may be dissapointed. Website RMA was going to charge me about $6 for credit due to 'restocking fee'.
I like the Egg, but they could be better. ZZF is VERY slow to ship sometimes. Egg is pretty reliable. The 'rush processing' should be standard practice IMO.
Do you guys know how much NewEgg is making on this drive? Let me tell you, they are making zip, unless Samsung is giving them something on the backend for selling a lot of them, and if they are it won't be but pennies per drive.
Any that is the shitty part of the computer business profit margins are super low. So why does everyone expect a e-tailer to ship their order to them for free, and then ship it back to them for free, if its bad? Newegg didn't manufacture the drive, and they surely didn't mean to sell you a defective unit, so why should they be responsible? Kinda like if you were to buy something at your local Best Buy, and it were defective, would it be prudent to ask Best Buy to pay for the gas and time it took you to return the product to the store?
Think of it this way Newegg buys 2000 of these drives from Samsung which they pay the freight in at $0.40 a drive, then you buy the drive, Newegg pays $4.00 to ship it to you, you get the drive and its bad, now you want them pay the shipping back and they do for $4.00, and then Newegg ships you a replacement for $4.00, and then Newegg takes the defective drive and ships it back to Samsung for $4.00 (they are not sending RMA in bulk). Where does that put Newegg; Out of business. Because Samsung sold them a bad drive, and you expected white glove service, it cost Newegg $16.00 worth of freight on a drive they made $0.50 on in the first place.
#7 hopefully fewer than one in 32 samsung drives that newegg sells are DOA and returned. Then newegg gets to stay in business.
(some may sit around awhile and people do not realise they are dead, or they are unsure of themselves and do not know it came DOA, or they do not want the hassle of returning a $30 drive)
Anyone know if NewEgg's "standard return policy" will pay for shipping back to NewEgg for DOA items?

I would get the definition of DOA.
