Most of the comments in that discussion are off-base. To begin with, 1½ Amps is a trickle charge for a car-sized SLA battery. If you read the product page, what it does is switch from that to a float charge when the SLA is charged up. Float voltage for a nominal-12V SLA is 13.8V, and the battery can be left in that condition indefinitely without harm.
