Never need sharpening? Only if you never use them. I have bought a couple of ceramic blades and was very disappointed in the longevity of the blade sharpness. I sent the first one back after a couple of weeks to be resharpened. A couple more weeks and I sent it back for a refund. Yes, they are very sharp in the beginning, but it doesn't last, and ceramic blades are quite difficult to sharpen at home.
All ceramic blades are not created equal. There are quality blades, made from high quality and purity zirconia. Some are made from not so pure components. Some of the top brands add yttrium and use advanced methods to toughen and stabilize the blade. These quality knives come with a price that is considerately more than $18.00.
