#2 you should check the interest rate for a savings account at your local bank... mine was 0.25%. I was quite happy to have this account. I still am happy to have it, though at it's best it was closer to 4-5% interest.

You may want to check out ebank.com. They offer 2.50% on their premium checking account with deposit over $10,000. Plus you get free(regular) checks and world wide free ATM (never tried). I have been using them for over 3 years. They are FDIC insured.

The other day, someone here mentioned about www.dollarsavingsdirect.com (a division of emigrantdirect). It gives 2.00%. Not a bad one! #6, thanks for the info on Ebank.com, which is even better!

You want to make sure you trust your bank. I can tell from personal experience that HSBC does its absolute best to keep your transactions are secure. Plus, you don't need a deposit of $10k to get this interest rate. Though I must say, that high on a checking account is pretty nice. I'm half tempted to look into HSBC checking accounts now.

    #8, FYI
I set up an HSBC account about a year ago, when they were offering around 2.6%. After about 6 months, i got an email saying the terms are lowering the interest rate.
a month or so later, they lowered it again.
    and then again.

in all, they lowered the interest rate by about 1%.
i have a feeling that this advertised rate is not going to last.

Did the same to me, so I've moved most of my money to Alliant Credit Union - they're still around 3% (with a 3% rate for custodial accounts as well).

    totally agree with #9

I got 3 saving accounts that had interest rate lower from 3% to 1.5% in 2009. If you know this, 1.65% is not attractive at all.

What would you expect with the fed rate about zero... No wonder the majors lowered theirs. It's actually encouraging that some, though minor, banks offer as much as 2.75% (like Alliant Credit Union) in the current situation.

i trust my local banks better than the bigger corp places.
    friendlier and more helpful.

i get 5.01% on my checking account...no minimum.

this being local to NJ... look up 'smart free checking'.

At current rates you're better off sewing your fortune into a mattress.

I'd suggest going with GMAC Bank, they offer 2.25% with a minimum of $1 to open an account, the best rate I've seen for an FDIC insured account.

Most banks are stuggling to give good rates, wait for a a good deal from you local bank, they might give you a high savings rate
