I think the point is most local banks offer less the 1% on savings so open your eyes and look around and you can easily find better places to put your money.

Who gives a baconnaise. Most banks will be insolvent in a years time and the FDIC is broke. Bury your money in your backyard before it's too late.

I am getting 6.01% at Arizona Bank & Trust w/ my Reward checking (grandfathered in) and new account holders get 5.01%...

No minimum balance, covers your ATM fees, good for balances up to $25k, just have to get your bill online and do some check card transactions every month.

#7, HSBC stands for _H_ong Kong _S_hanghai _B_anking _baconrporation, so they're hardly British, but they did buy out one of the British high street banks about 5 years ago.

i remember when HSBC was 5.25%, your money is and always will be safe in a bank, putting it under your mattress or in your backyard is stupid.

Yeah, if you literally put your cash in your mattress/back yard/etc. If someone steals it you just lost all of it for sure.

If you have less than the insured limit (I think 250k these days) then your biggest risk is access to the cash while the FDIC gets it sorted out. If the FDIC can't actually make all of the customers whole at any given bank then we probably have bigger problems to deal with than to worry about cash.

If you have to have your cash and just won't trust a bank then put your cash in a safety deposit box. There's always the chance the bank will burn down or get robbed, but I'd take my chances with a bank vault a long time before I'd leave it lying around my house.
