EverydaySource has the HDMI to DVI Cable 5Gbps M/M, 10 FT / 3 M, Black for $14 - $8 off with coupon code M09AD090901 [Exp 9/12] = $6 with free shipping. Code requires free registration. Cable built with matching impedance, PVC jacket, molded ends.
HDMI content is either copy protected or it is not. If it is, like for a bluray player, then this cable will not help with the conversion. Yes be aware that the days of relatively simple cable converters are probably gone.
DVI can also support copy protection, the cable is a fine for adapting the DVI output of modern video cards to HDMI monitor input. It just won't do any good if your monitor has speakers you want to use w/o a separate audio cable since DVI doesn't carry audio.
Last adapter cable like this I bought was a "refurb" from Newegg, I threw it onto an order for a couple other things I needed and after raising the total shipping price by $1, it ended up costing $4 delivered. $6 delivered is not bad though, you could spend more time than it's worth to hunt down a better deal if it doesn't jump out at you.
