Tivo has lost their relevance. Their business model is already turning to patent litigation because they are losing their subscriber base. I love my S1 Tivo but find it difficult to justify the subscription up-charge.
Tivo still makes the BEST DVR out there. Their user interface is better than what you get from a cable or dish subscriber.
A while ago you could get the DVR's from Tivo for very little. My second Tivo was free after rebate. Then you could buy a lifetime subscription for $200 (a long time ago) or $250 (my second Tivo). Well worth it IMO.
But I agree, most people probably just go with the cable or dish provided box.
I'm sure they're hoping their long-anticipated DirecTivo will bring back many DirecTV subscribers.
However, other than larger capacity I don't really see anything that this Tivo offers over the TivoHD I already have...
I refuse to buy the new model if it's slower than the previous model.
Wait until they re-code the frontend to use both cores, for now, the last generation is faster.
In money terms, buy a refurbished old version, wait 2 years for them to get this working, and buy it after the price drops. That way you'll always have the fastest model, get 2 of them, and spend about the same amount of money.
#1, don't kid yourself that the subscription is that much of an up-charge. Most cable companies charge for their DVR service AND cable box and sometimes even a fee for high def equipment. My tivo allows me to eliminate all that and i actually save more than the service fee on my cable bill after switching ($22 from cable vs. $9 from tivo with a 3 year contract). Cable companies are very good at hiding those fees from customers.
Tivo has no future whatsoever. The Likes of Hulu, TV.com and netflix are gonna finish off this greedy moronic company.
I love my S1 TiVo's UI, and would gladly pay for the Premier XL with Lifetime subscription. However, with my Comcast cable service, the inability to use On Demand with the TiVo is a dealbreaker. As much as my Comcast Moto cable box UI sucks, and as much as the way it handles series subscriptions is stupid, and as small as the recording capacity is, I can still start up some program for my kids to watch anytime I need 20 min to finish something up. TiVo with 2 CableCards, or a single Dual-channel CableCard can only tune live TV, and not tap into OnDemand. By Comcast's design, I'm sure.
Until then, TiVo, even with a Netflix (among others) partnership, will be an irrelevant in my house.
