There are some really negative comments regarding the batteries on these.

I have these...the short battery life is my top complaint. Second one is that if I'm already on a call, the caller ID doesn't work. Philips says talk to AT&T, and AT&T says it's the phone. Annoying... Anyway, great reception, and ability to transfer phone book to the other handsets is nice.
Rated pretty high on Consumer Reports, but I'm also tempted to try the Unidens on Woot.com today...includes a waterproof handset. How cool.

I have a two-handset, no answering machine, version of this phone and agree that there is a problem with battery life. Specifically, it seems that the battery discharges quickly when the "missed call" LED is flashing. Talk-time and standby-time aren't terrible when that damb LED isn't lit up.
The phone book isn't bad, but transferring between handsets is basic and results in duplicate entries if you don't clear out the target handset's phone book before transferring. A nice feature of the phone book is the ability to assign entries to different groups and to give those groups unique ring tones.
EDITed to add: If you are willing to spend $70+ on a phone system, skip this one and check out some of Panasonic's offerings.
