#1: I'm wondering that as well.

if you want essentially the same features or better for a lower price, take a look at the Canon PowerShot A1000.

It has a 10MP sensor, 4x optical zoom, image stabilization, and it uses standard AA batteries. Lately newegg has been running combo deals where can get a camera bag and 4GB SD card for free with the purchase of the A1000 camera.

If you get the PowerShot A1000, be sure to load up CHDK on it to unlock extra features, like a live histogram, optical zoom while taking a video, RAW format photos, and many other things.

Just as a note, if you do have the Canon SD870, CHDK is available for that camera as well.

This is great price for a great camera with a wide angle lens so you get more picture in your shots. I would never compare it to the A1000 that takes batteries. That is a camera your Aunt who doesn't give a shit about you wins at Bingo and gives you for a christmas present. If you want a nice camera that outperforms higher megapixel cameras (that just add more noise with their megapixels) then this is worth the purchase refurbished or not.

Indeed #2! CHDK adds greatly to the DIGIC Canon cameras. It gave my A710 new life with the added features.

    CompWiz17,
I have found that Canon cameras with two AAs have a much longer refresh rate (time lag between pictures?) than those with a proprietary battery. Plus, the battery protrusion takes them out of the "pocket" category.
Thank you for all your useful and to the point information. I am still using the Xfinity 600 Watt, FAR, supply that you recommended.

I don't think you know much a bout P&S digital camera. Please do more research before posting your comment and info. Canon Powershot SD870 IS is still one of the best P&S digital camera today. Do not embarrass yourself by comparing the PowerShot A1000 to SD870 IS.

#7: I'm not saying that the SD 870IS is a bad camera. However, the A1000 costs less, has a higher resolution sensor, and has a longer zoom lens.

Plus, it uses AA batteries, which some people prefer. Instead of having to recharge the battery when it goes dead, you can just pop a couple fresh batteries in and keep shooting.

Of course, the battery type is a matter of preference. As #6 states it may be the case that Li-Ion battery has advantages.

As for research, I have looked up reviews on these cameras. Many of the Canon PowerShot cameras are excellent cameras, so it's just a matter of comparing which ones are better. Reviews are very positive on the A1000, and it has a nice feature set at a low price.
