Avast! is a great free alternative. As for pay software, I'd go with ESET NOD32.

AVAST paid or not is the best in my books, If I could get a dollar for everyone I have recommended installed and turn to paid, I would have enough for a new computer.

All the free AV are close enough in effectiveness that it is still the same old story, the user is the weakest link.
