it's actually nice to take advantage of the current SSD trend, even if you're unwilling to take the dive. High end conventional notebook magnetic platter drives are extremely affordable, even for those who don't care.

nice drive for a decent price. I use this along with a Rosewill external case to give me a portable 320GB hard drive for backups. No power supply needed.

#2 - How are data read/write speeds? I'm thinking about putting my 320GB Momentus drive in an external case, but I'm thinking the bottleneck would be the USB port, so the 7200RPM speed of the drive wouldn't be noticed.

USB is the bottleneck, no need to get anything over 5400rpms(4200rpm would probably cut it too)
unless you're planning to shove this into a laptop or an eSATA enclosure, there's no point. Get the 5400rpm for lower price/power consumption

I'll never purchase a hard drive from NewEgg again. NewEgg's packaging is as bad as it gets so the hard drive is very likely to get damaged during shipping. Don't just take my word for it, look at the reviews.
