Intuit has a free version on their site
http://quickbooks.intuit.com/qb/products/common/direct_download/af/?priorityCode=3969702399

Its not this version, but its free so you can try before you buy.

Last time this product was posted, it was noted in discussion that if you have a small business with employees, this version will not work. A more expensive edition is required.

I downloaded the 2008 version sometime last year...thought about upgrading to 2009 and found out it has a limit of 20 customers while 2008 has no such limit.

20 customers? You mean I can only do accounting for 20 companies, or each company can have only 20 vendors, or what?

#5 - I could be wrong, but I'm thinking the 20 customer limitation means 20 vendors max.

From what I understand, the downloadable "Simple Start FREE Edition 2009" has the 20 customer/vendor limit. The boxed (non-free) "Simple Start Edition 2009" lists the limit as 10,000+.

Other than that, it appears to be about the same. There is a feature comparison here: http://quickbooks.intuit.com/product/accounting-software/free-accounting-software.jsp

#5: sk8erboy is correct, the 20 contacts counts for both customers and vendors total. I believe this is just for ongoing tracking, so if you buy from a vendor once or twice, you don't have to track them as specific vendor accounts, but if you need to track a lot, the free download is definitely too limited in that regard.

So if you willing to deal with the rebate hassle, the Fry's deal is roughly the same as the free download, except it lets you track 10,000+ vendors & contacts.

Disclaimer: I have not used any versions of Quickbooks yet, so this is based on recent research to decide if I am going to use one of their offerings or not.

Well, the 2008 Simple Start "Free Edition" still didn't have the 20 customer/vendor limit. I only know this because before I downloaded 2009 it said I wouldn't be able to convert my 2008 data if I had more than 20 customers, so I kept the old version (which still works great). I still have the 2008 install file on my computer since they made it unavailable to download.

Ah, that makes sense. The free version has limitations. Of course. Thanks for the logic boot. lol
