Last week Fry's had this drive in a retail pack for $109 with free shipping. The retail drives have 5-year warranty, this Dell deal has 3-year. I'll wait for another sale on the retail version as $9 for two more years and cables seems worth it. Would have bought more from Fry's but limit was one drive.

I got one when it was $82. It works, but it's really hot and it's behaved in such ways as to not inspire much confidence.

I also got a 1TB WD for $80, in which I'm more confident. Hopefully this Seagate will last a while.

Give me a 4 pack for the same price cos there's bound to be a 50% chance of failure on these..so I'd be left with 2..

funny how they still push these, even tho they fail so often. the WD black edition looks to be the 7200.10 of todays time.

#2 - It must be where you put it in your case. All of mine run at about 27-29c.

#3 and #4 - the only issue with this drive was the colosal firmware cork-up. With good firmware these drives are a reliable and excellent value.

I have 8. They are fast and cheap per GB. Of course I bought them during the special $83 sale, but this deal isn't too bad.

#3/#4 I love how people still ride that crap months after the firmware has been upgraded.

I am running 5 of these and none have had issues. I had to upgrade the firmware on the first 2 back in the day from the shitty version, the other 3 were already fixed.

A buck is a decent deal for these, but yeah, the $83 was much nicer.

I also fall in the "no problems with mine" category, and agree with all the firmware comments. The *only* issue I have with mine is that it takes a second or two to spin up (and is fairly audible while doing so) if you haven't accessed it for a while.

The drive I got from Fry's had the updated firmware. You can check the seagate website and find out if your drive needs an upgrade.

#8, I don't think they're riding crap. I had three of these, the last two with the supposedly upgraded firmware, and none of them worked right. They work fine for a lot of people, so I think there is a compatibility issue that hasn't been completely explained. But the Seagate service (or lack thereof), the runaround, the failure to take responsibility, etc., made me swear off Seagate forever (and that's after buying probably 35 or 40 Seagate drives over the last 10-12 years). Luckily, there are other companies making perfectly good drives; I'll stick with them from now on.

Yes, there are companies making perfectly good drives, and Seagate is one of them.

And quit whining about the warranty. These drives are very unlikely to fail between the 3-year and 5-year marks, and most people upgrade drives more often than that anyway.

I've got a fan directly blowing on mine

Tempting.. But which side do I believe? Oh, the horror!

One of these made a horrible beeping noise & dropped off the RAID 1 mirror I had setup. A 92mm fan blows across the drive.
I checked the existing working drive & the replacement drive, both had the current firmware.

#12 - what, exactly, does "none of them worked right" and "is a compatibility issue" mean? I've used thousands of drives, on numerous operating systems, and they all pretty much work the same, and are generally 100% compatible. So, when Seagate fails to take responsibility for something you are furbar'ing, how is it their fault?

Meanwhile, I've sold many of these, as well as the 1Tb and 750Gb versions of these 7200.11 drives, and never had a single problem with any of them. I personally like the extra warranty, so have been buying many of them as retail kits from Fry's B&M.

#17 I agree with extra warranty being nice, but when i bought 2 @ 100 and 3 @ 82, the retails were significantly more.

2pac didn't get assassinated!

Did you know that before 2pac was shot and killed he was involved in another shooting incident? In that incident he was shot in the groin and apparently the bullet did a lot of damage. That's when 2pac almost became 1pac. True story.
