some of the best protection from having a fast computer that I know of.

If you'd like to secure your computer without spending money(and get much better protection than this McAfee package), download AVG free(virus and spyware/adware protection), download Microsoft Windows defender, download Comodo firewall, and download Spybot S&D.

All free, all much better than McAfee.

As an alternative to AVG anti-virus, the free Anvir AntiVir antivirus program has been getting excellent reviews lately.

If you're willing to spend a little bit of money and you have speed/processor load concerns, I highly recommend Vipre -- although it has no firewall component.

I gave up on AVG free last year when email attachment after attachment just blew right through it with a specific virus payload for several days.

I'm using Avast! now, and so far it's trapped everything, but it's not for everyone: a very obtuse interface, and the inability to back off if I tell it a file is safe when it thinks it's not.

#5: what costs more, buying a mac, or buying good security software?

I understand what you are saying #6, but I shopped, saved and got the machine I really wanted. It is ideal for me. Just so happens that I don't have the security problems I did with with my PCs.

#2, Avira has been far better than AVG for a LONG time. It still is. The only comparable AV is NOD32, and I actually prefer Avira over even that. http://www.av-comparatives.org/
