solid drive for a good price. I have never had a seagate go out, stay away maxtor

#1: You realize that Maxtor is a Seagate brand at this point (e, they are produced by Seagate)?

In any case, for those that need to mirror 1.5TB or need the full 3GB, this is a good deal on a good drive. These drives had a simply horrible reputation whent they were first released, but a firmware fix addressed the abominable performance. I have one, and it has proven reliable and performs well other than an unusually long (but still just a few seconds) spinup time when it powers down for energy savings.

don't know if this one has firmware problem?
    #4   gummy - Posted 8:44 am PDT 06/8/09 (572 Posts)
#3 - It is highly unlikely to, as everything Seagate has made for the last 6 months or so has the update. Even if you did find some freak "old stock", the update is downloadable from Seagate's website.

How much speed difference will I NOTICE when I replace my 250 gb Seagate 7200.10 with one of these?

I think this sounds like a good candidate for a NAS back-up solution.

I am pretty damn sure this is part of the bad batch.

#5 You won't notice any speed difference. You will notice a 6x capacity difference.

Seagate must be dumping these trash drives. One of these already died on me. I suspect another one is going to go.

They have fixed the firmware issues. CCH1 is good firmware, SD1X is bad drives.

I gave up on Seagate hard drives about 6 months ago because of my personal experience with failure rate. Maybe they're making them better now, who knows. I'll stick with WD's. WD are extremely quiet compared to Seagate.

Although you can only buy one, Fry's has the single retail version for $117, http://www.frys.com/product/5803213

Few months back Dell sold this drive for $85. I got one before it went out of stock within hours. This drive is really fast compared to the 400GB I have before. And it didnt have that firmware problem some of the earlier batche had. So I believe what u get from them are good drives with new firmware.

    Yep, me too. Great drive.

#17 is correct, I have the same experience. Postscript is to wait for $85 again, unless you are in dire need right now.
