If you had bought yourself a decent laptop you wouldn't need one of these. Instead, you are the proud owner of a netbook that has 9 hours of battery life, but you can't actually do anything worthwhile for those 9 hours.

This is a good unit. Works with mac OSX too with native software. No stupid power brick to deal with.

I honestly can't remember the last time I burned a DVD. Easier to just use external hard drives.

My 16 gig Flash drive can hold almost four of you DVDs.

I have this, and it works fine with my Asus netbook.

However, don't even think of using this with a hub (powered or not) or any extension cable. It has to plug into two adjacent USB ports to work. That means directly to two ports on the same side of your PC or laptop.

Only time I use DVD these days is to install a new OS or burn a DVD for a technologically-challenged friend. When traveling, I just load up my netbook with divx from "various sources". I'd say that a 16GB memory card holds something like over 20 DVDs because of the more efficient compression. This would be convenient but I can save $50 and use my old IDE drive + USB adapter + power brick for the rare occasion when I need a DVD on my netbook. #1, you need to get on with the times!

I trust (good quality) DVD media over hard drives any day. People that use a hard drive as a back up device are just asking to lose their data.
