Are blu-ray discs cheap enough to want to burn?

#6 depends on your concept of "cheap." They seem to be around 5-10 dollars a disk for 25gb which isn't cheap, but if your looking to store something really large... I think the question is more, what do you need to burn that you cannot already burn on a CD?

#6 No! Hard drives kick Blue Rays A*S*S on cost per MB and can be rewritten. Blue Ray is soon to be the new 8 track. Just get a ROM for now if you just want to watch movies. If BR manages to survive the price will have to come way down and you will be able to get a burner cheap then. Don't invest in buggy whips..

I remember paying $200 for my first CD burner and $75 for a spindle of CD-Rs. I won't make that mistake again.

#9, heh, I remember paying $350 for my first CD-ROM drive and soundcard. The drive could read up to 2x! And that was a deal back then. Of course, I also remember getting a great deal on a 500MB drive - only $350, less than $1 per MB! (Though my favorite HD was my first one, a 5.25" form factor 10MB Western Digital that I picked up used for around $100, another steal. That sucker had the storage of 300 floppy disks - 360kb each back then!) And let me tell you about walking 5 miles to school in the snow....

LOL #10, ok I'm not that old, but I was a pretty early adopter of a 19" LCD (with DVI) in Fall 2004 for 400 bucks after Rebate. And yes, it was a pretty damn good deal back then as well. Very Happy

And oh, I still have (and occasionally use) a Maxtor 250GB Ext. HD (USB 2.0 / FireWire) that I got (ON A DEAL) for $320. Neutral

Agreed - I just bought a blu-ray ROM drive for $79 and watch movies on it. Even $79 was as much as I would spend. The image quality is really great though.

But agree, for $/mb - blu-ray is the worst option for data storage. Blank media is still too expensive as is the writers.

    I'll jump at $50
