A better cooling solution is to put a front case fan and let the air flow over the hard drives. I had one of these coolers before and it resulted in a thick layer of dust on the HD.

#1 I beg to differ - have you ever seen a server in a computer room?

Fans close to your hard drives coupled with good case ventilation is one of the best things you can do to prolong the life of your drives, especially in a warm climate.

#2 You are piling on the wrong heap, mate. Ethernet 'card', indeed... so 1990's.

I have one of these on one of my HD's ... didn't put it on the other one since that one is right infront of a case fan. Anyway they work. That HD is 2-3C lower temps

You need air blowing over a hard drive to prolong its life. SSDs don't really need it, but it wouldn't hurt.
