It can be upgraded from vista for free right? I bought my laptop from Dell last year, can I get it for free?

How does this upgrade work? You have to have your vista installed in order to upgrade to windows 7? So when I want to reinstall Windows 7 later, I'd have to install vista again and Windows 7?

Sounds like the Dell sales people worked over #1 pretty good.

#5 should take a few minutes with Google to read up on Windows 7. There's lots of good information out there, like this: http://bacon.com/nh5cev

@ this guy "How does this upgrade work? You have to have your vista installed in order to upgrade to windows 7? So when I want to reinstall Windows 7 later, I'd have to install vista again and Windows 7? "

Most of the time the upgrade disks will ask you to simply pop in the disk for your previous version of windows. At least that's how the XP upgrade was. You'll still have the option of doing a clean install, as that's the ebst way to ensure you'll get the best use out of the new OS.

#5, If you own Vista, you can do either a clean boot install or an upgrade if you already have Vista installed. You have to back up your files and do a clean boot, then reinstall all of your software if you still have XP.

Ah Nuisance, such a wealth of knowledge. His answer is incomplete, but hey, at least he's trying to appear like a legitimate poster. I see there's a wave of oinkings going around.

The upgrade disks will ask you to simply pop in the disk for your previous version of windows so that you don't have to actually have Vista installed. At least that's how the XP upgrade was. You'll still have the option of doing a clean install, as that's the best way to ensure you'll get the best use out of the new OS.

Anyone know if this will be the standard upgrade price? If so, looks like they finally are doing some reasonable price structure.

"California customers are required to sign up for Micro Center Rewards Program."

No thanks.

Also, can you upgrade from an XP license (even though you can't actually upgrade from XP), or are all upgrades based on Vista?

HAHA! Hilarious that you realized your HAHA ID got OINKed so you had to repost the same thing under your jusalie ID. Actually, my post was MORE complete than yours since I warned people that with XP they can only do a clean install. But whatever makes you feel better about your life, Cybil.

FYI - For those who don't live near a Micro-Center, you can order it directly from MS for $50 and $100. They have options to download it, ship it, or download and ship a backup copy for $15 more.

#10, no, this price is supposedly for pre-order only and a limited time. The price will about double if you wait.

#11, to reiterate, you can buy the upgrade version if you own XP, but you have to do a clean install rather than an upgrade. However, if you simply own a license and not an XP disk, you may not be able to use the upgrade version. I'd research that before you buy.

I thought 7 > XP > Vista... so XP to 7 would be an upgrade, Vista to 7 would be a major upgrade.

I also heard that 7 is what Vista should have been... just 2+ years late.

I bought a 'netbook' a month ago or so. It came with XP. Can I upgrade for $40? (I cant, because I dont have a micro center anywhere near me. But hypodermically?)

#5 - Not sure if Windows7 "upgrade" works like Vista "upgrade" but read this:

Like #11 said is this a Vista only upgrade or if you are running Genuine Copy/Key of XP Professional, I can preorder this disc and ungrade for $90 and there no sipulations as to when it was purchased, OEM, etc?

All see is from microsoft...
"If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications."
By that it sounds like you'd do backup, clean XP install, then the Upgrade disc, enter the XP key and then the Wind7 key and reinstall apps and folders. ok...

Honestly, I might (for the fist time) buy an OEM copy with CPU/Mobo/Dx11 upgrades and start on a new machine.

Does anyone know if the license applies to more than one computer?
#18   just_a_guy - Posted 10:41 am PDT 06/26/09 (411 Posts)
Nuisance, if you keep trolling you'll get yourself banned again. You last ban was far too short. It's no wonder you can't make any friends with you being so paranoid and all.

In any case, you would all be well advised not to take Nuisance's information too seriously. Check his posting history if you want to know why he's considering the anal wart of this site.

this page has all the upgrade answers you could need, and you can also just order your upgrade from there as well.
