If you're considering this camera, also take a look at the previous-generation HF10, which can be had for $549 in-store at Costco. There are some minor differences between the two, but many reviews suggest that the previous-generation HF10/100 produced better quality video, particularly in anything less than bright light.

You also get 16GB built-in memory with the HF10, which is a couple hours worth of video at the highest quality setting.

One advantage to the HF200 is the max bitrate has been raised from 17Mbps to 24Mbps, the max allowable in the AVCHD spec - but by most accounts this simply increases file size without an appreciable increase in quality.

I got HF200 for less than 540(including shipping
). so costco is not a good deal.

if you can wait for another two years, it will be around 400 dollars.

And how much did a 16GB card cost you to go with it?

A few bucks here or there on a $500+ purchase is essentially identical pricing, and at the end of the day, you're going to get better video out of the HF10 in most situations.

Good thing this site isn't called bensifyoucanwaittwomoreyearsitwilbecheaper.net.

I have the hf100 (last years version) and love it. Great cameras, but save yourself some money and try to find last years model for even less.

#5, the HF100 has pretty much disappeared from store shelves. If you can find them, from what I've seen, they are selling for more than the HF200.

With the current state of things, I opted to buy a cheap DXG HD camcorder for $200 along with 3 X 8GB SDHC cards I got for $33 AR. I figure that will get me by for the next couple of years until the mid-range gear takes the next jump in capability and performance.
