Good posts #10 & #13.

I'll add "Dune". While they did their best to "dumb it down" for the general public, it didn't fly with them. Those of us who read the books were somewhat disappointed with the "condensing" of the story line, but we endured it and enjoyed what they did get onto the screen. Still, we were left a bit empty.

But dang it, I love to rearrange the glassware in my house when I crank up the volume during the battle scene!

When science fiction becomes reality, it will not be Star Wars for BS Gallactica. It will be Logans Run, Dune, and The Fungi from Yoggoth.

#20, In defense of the "trilogy" label, 2,3, and 4 are the only Star Trek films with a coherent, multi-film arc and common themes (IMHO). The rest are basically stand-alone long episodes. It's still a silly marketing ploy, but at least a defensible one.

SPOILERS for the 7 folks who haven't seem these yet:

2: Spock dies saving the Enterprise, but not before putting his memories into Bones.
3: Crew hijacks the Enterprise to rescue the reborn Spock. Enterprise is destroyed and our heroes end up with a Klingon ship.
4: Crew returns to Earth in their stolen ship to face justice. They detour to the 1980s to pick up some whales to save Earth. Kirk is demoted back to Captain and they get a new, shiny Enterprise.

So we get death and rebirth of Spock, of the Enterprise, and of the Earth itself (as represented by the whales). 3 and 4 both start far from the status quo (3: no Spock; 4: no Enterprise) so they really are best viewed together as a trilogy.

Yes, I'm a nerd.
