Because they make their money by getting you instore... you think they sell these things for this low for no reason?

While they don't have a MicroCenter near me, I do recommend the chip. I've been running a 920 based system since January or so, and I simply love it. Now, if only the memory prices for larger chips would come down so I could afford to take the system up to a full 24GB.

Microcenter's staff are driven by commission, I've noticed most of them don't know squat about hardware.. yet they make recommendations. I've known people who stated that upgrading to a phenom 2 over a phenom results in 2x the performance ..and that buying memory that costs more translates to faster performance..they also have no clue about which components have poor reviews online. Don't believe a word of what they say, do your homework before you head out there cos the rep who helps you will also slap his bar coded sticker on anything that you buy which will then be scanned by the cashier, which in turn shows up on the rep's commission at the end of the quarter.
If you're picking up a usb cable for $2.99, you're a nobody. Instead, if you're holding a $199 motherboard on your right hand and a $250 graphics card on your left, you suddenly have yourself a good friend!

Seriously though, those reps are worthless. I suggest going to MicroCenter only if you need to have an item right away as their stuff is usually more expensive than online.

Microcenter is generally overpriced compared to what you can find online as others have said. I will say they have better deals than worstbuy though. Its just about the convenience of taking it home that day and being able to return it easily if there are problems.

They have great deals on intel processors and sometimes you can find a gem here and there from other products.

I saved $60 on a Q6600 a year and a half ago. I also got a good deal on a gigabyte motherboard.

Perfect advice, and goes for ALL retailers. How many technically savvy folks get a career as salespeople at a retail chain?

B&M retailers make a huge profit on add-ons (extended warranties, cables, surge protectors). They also don't seem able to compete in low volume items with volatile prices, like video cards.

That said, I really like both MicroCenter and Fry's, and give them most of my business. On many sale items they beat mail order by a large margin, and their easy return policies make them invaluable.

Every business has a negative side. Anyone ever had a problem with a monitor they mail ordered (except from Dell)? There goes $50 in shipping. Unless it's only 7 dead pixels in the middle of the screen, in which case you have to keep it. The bad system board I got from a large company that ends in "egg" cost me $20 in 2-way shipping charges. and on and on (I like the "egg" but I'm really careful about what I order from them)

So there it is. $200 plus tax, and if you have a problem, you drive back and instantly get a replacement.

what works with pushy salespeople at the local Frys is telling them you know what video cards/memory and all cost online so in exchange for leaving you alone, you won't share your knowledge with the other customers...

I share my knowledge every chance I get for spite. Oh boy the dirty looks I get for telling a potential customer to put the monster cable back on the rack (or throw it on the floor) and order from monoprice.com... it's priceless.

Unlike MicroCenter, many of Fry's online prices are different than their in-store prices. For example, the Hyper TX2 cooler was $17 online and $35 in the store. Patriot memory was $45 online (minus $20 rebate), but $60 in the store (same rebate). Arctic Silver $6 online, $8 in the store. The sales people pretend not to know about the online prices, and the items ring up at full price at the register if you buy them from the store - not at the online price.

So I NEVER just go to Fry's and buy stuff. I always buy it online, with store pickup. Then I drive to the store, and it's at the registers waiting for me. Funniest thing is that the price tags on the items waiting at the register have the (high) store prices.

They have some great prices on stuff, but you have to know to buy it online ahead of time.

I just bytched-out my brother and sister-in-law for getting talked into buying a $73 (Monster, of course)HDMI cable @ BB with the TV they bought (they had an HDMI cable at home, but were told that they needed this "special" cable for their 120hz tv and gaming).

I bought mine about a month ago from Microcenter. I got it along with the Gigabyte UD3R mobo while it was on sale and 6GB of OCZ RAM they had on sale too. Everything is running great, and the prices on the mobo and ram was about the same as online. However one of the RAM sticks was bad, so Microcenter had me mail them the bad stick and then overnighted me a new good stick the next day. I had complained that I didn't want to drive 45 miles to get my RAM replaced, so that was their solution which worked great for me. A+ for customer service. Plus while I was there they pricematched the case (Antec Sonata III) to Best Buy with no issues, even though it was a 50$ difference.

Who cares if the salesman aren't as knowledgeable as you? Most of us go in there knowing what we want anyways.

just buy the CPU only and get out of there
