I got one off ebay for $15 shipped and it came with a 6' long HDMI cable. about $10 without on ebay.

Does anyone know if audio is passed through the mini display port to the HDMI? Would one have to pass the audio separately through another cable?

kiddy, that's a yes. This does support audio pass-through. but if you're looking to use this on the mac, it doesn't support that, since audio is not passed through on the mac.
btw, i have one of these, i'd recommend getting an hdmi to dvi converter with this for a few bucks (also from meritline) so you can connect to hdmi and dvi.
