I've got this unit and it works well enough. records in real time from your video source via rca jacks or s-video onto a usb drive.

why would I need this device when most cameras have firewire out and my computer can capture video strait into Final Cut on the Mac or Straight into Premiere CS2.

I know many people do not have the software and this might be the only way they can understand how to capture video. For home use this device is OK and provably works fine.
