Yamaha is stil quality; they're not associated with Klipsch/Denon/Onkyo etc most of the time, but I'm not sure if that's fair or not.
But brand aside, with Blu-Ray market share gaining and the eventual takeover from DVD, I question why anyone would buy a 5.1 receiver. Most people hold on to receivers for a long time, so why not buy 7.1 now, so you're blu-ray ready, even if you won't use the extra two channels yet? $330 for a receiver that will be obsolete soon seems like not that great of a deal.

A 5.1 system saves money and there is really no 7.1 movie that has wowed me yet. A 5.1 encoded movie sounds about 98% as good as a 7.1 encoded movie. Used the extra money on a second sub. You can never have too much bass. Will future 7.1 encoded movies be better? Who knows.

Depending on your room, 5.1 can be equal to 1 If you know what house you'll be living in for the next 10 years, why pay for 7.1 if you know your room doesn't really have a good way to setup 7 speakers?
Yamaha is way better than Onkyo IMHO. Onkyo's sound just seems very thin to me, it doesn't have the raw power, and sounds aweful at loud volumes. I only have the TX-SR603X, but the Pro Logic Kenwood receiver I had way back when and a pair of high end Sony (not ES, but decent) far outperformed this Onkyo, and I have never been impressed by any of the higher level models either. I have owned other high end models (Denon, HK) and they do live up to their reputations as does Yamaha.
