If you have a 1080i TV, do 720p channels get upconverted, or does the TV "scale" itself down to show it at 720?

#2...all TVs scale to their native resolution. The pixels never change, only the input.

If it's a 1080i CRT TV it's not fixed pixel.

#2, as I understand it: A 1080i signal is less information than 720p, since only 540 lines are shown at a time. That's why broadcasters prefer 1080i signals to 720p signals-- less bandwidth required. So a 720p signal wouldn't get "upconverted" because it's already more information - just reinterpolated. From a display standpoint, a 1080p set just buffers both sets of 540 lines, hopefully with some interpolation for movement.
