Compaq Laptop for $380-$30 Easy Rebate = $350.
That's about the same price as many netbooks--sure it's a bit less portable. Maybe the new Toshiba mini is the way to go if portability is the primary concern. Or if it's role would be to play 2nd fiddle to your primary PC/notebook.
