THis seems Ok but does not play h.264 video like the WDTV player. Does anyone know what the quality of these are?

# 2 -- It is a player only: basically, hard drive with player interface.
You may use your desktop or laptop with external HD for the same. If your machine has S-Video or HDMI/DVI output - you may watch it on big screen TV. Most modern LCD/Plasma TV have VGA monitor input. So, you may connect your computer to external monitor - your TV.
If you add a good HD TV tuner for about $65 and external 500GB HD for $60 - you may record HD shows for about 70 hours (720P) on your computer too.
