"This adapter has an output of 1000mA, not the measly 400mA or 500mA that you find in most other adapters"
These other adapters cost 99 cents (1 checked on ebay). Cell phones and most other devices do not need more than the "measly 400mA or 500mA" anyway.
Future electronics are getting more energy-efficient device so chances are you will not need more than the "measly 400mA or 500mA" .
Bad deal.

I thought the iPhone and the Palm Pre now need the 1000mA charger, therefore this is the wave of the future, no?

Indeed #2, as the USB 2.0 specification only allows for 500mA
