One-year warranty at this price is a ripoff.

does anyone ever use the warranty anyways?? i seem to just forget about it most of the time

I thought all external drives have 1 year warranty.

I used to worry about the warranty back when an 80mb drive was $500. But now I wouldn't even think to check (unless the drive died after a couple months.)

Most people make the mistake of thinking a drive with a 5 year warranty will last 5 times longer or is 5 times better than a drive with a 1 year warranty. It's all marketing hype and #1 is falling for it.

All MFG warranties are 1 year. The retailer will honor the MFG warranty but they will also try to sell you their service plan which is pretty much the same as the MFG warranty.

I won't debate the merits of 1 vs 5 year warranty.
But if it is a deal killer for you, Staples also has advertised its 1TB My Book Home Edition (USB and Firewire) for $139. That one does have a longer warranty if that is an important issue to you.

if you're not a staples fan, these are available @ target this week for 99.99 plus a $10 gift card. when i think of Staples, I think of the Lakers and that pisses me off.

Seagate exernals typically have a 5-year warranty. Internal WD drives typically have 3-year warranties.

Why does WD only provide a 1-year warranty on their external drives? Because they know they frequently fail. Speaking from personal experience, I have had several WD external drives that didn't last much more than one year.

All HDs will eventually fail. But with a longer warranty at least you get another drive instead of "sorry out of warranty." And the chance that the company knows the drives will fail in a stort time, offer a short warranty and leave you holding the bag.

I only buy from Staples exclusively when it comes to office supplies because of the Lakers. Got Lakers. Celtics suck!!!

I have this and it works great for holding lots of music/movies. I think I bought it refurbished. It has lasted for 18 months so far with no issues.
